Week of the Young Child
Every year, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) promotes the Week of the Young Child as day care centers across America plan events to celebrate and raise awareness of children’s needs. This year’s celebration, held April 19-25, 2009, was entitled Bring Communities Together for Children—Children Bring Communities Together.
A Shining Star Learning Center planned a fun-filled week of lesson, activities, and crafts where the children learned about Community Helpers. The children and staff were encouraged to daily dress in character of each of the Community Helpers in the spotlight.
Monday ~ Business Men and Women
The children created their own briefcase to “take to work.”
Tuesday ~ Police Officers and Firefighters
Our guest speaker was Officer Brian Williams from the Normal Police Department. A favorite activity was being handcuffed by Officer Williams!
Wednesday ~ Farmers
What a perfect way to celebrate Earth Day by planting seeds!
Thursday ~ Medical Professionals
Dr. Andrea Kane spoke with the children about her role as a pediatrician and how all of her instruments work. The children created health care collages with various medical supplies.
Friday ~ Veterinarians
Meow Mix was a fun afternoon treat on Friday. The children decorated collars for their favorite stuffed animal.
